There are so many hazards that our children come in contact with on a daily basis. The trick is to make sure your child follows some basic safety rules and that your child’s caregivers and teachers are also working to keep him or her safe. Here are some tips to help ensure your child’s day at school is a little safer.
Talk to your child about basic safety rules, such as how to get on and off the bus safely, including waiting for it to come to a complete stop, sitting down and facing forward while the bus is in motion, and asking the driver to help if necessary.
Make sure your child also knows to obey school rules, such as not climbing or skateboarding on stair railings or walls, not running in the bathroom or cafeteria, not throwing snowballs, and other similar rules.
Children should also listen to teachers as well as know how to ask for help if needed.
Talk to your child’s teacher about classroom safety, such as having outlets covered, loose cords wrapped up and stored away, desk and chair legs tightened, etc. Your child should know where the emergency exits for both the classroom and the school. They should also know basic fire and earthquake safety. The school should hold regular drills to practice for emergency situations.
Crossing guards and anyone monitoring the high traffic areas around the school should be able to help your child enter and exit the school safely with as little contact with cars as possible.
Playground monitors should prevent children from playing too rough, climbing too high on equipment, and otherwise playing dangerously.
